چکیده

Constructed wetlands (CW) are an alternative localized treatment technology suitable for reducing BOD, COD, NPK and pathogens to acceptable levels for subsequent use of treated water, especially for irrigation. Dissolved chemicals and heavy metals are also reduced to an extent. CWs are extensively used in developed countries for secondary and tertiary treatment of domestic sewage and treatment of surface run off as well as industrial effluents. But CWs are yet to be commercialized in developing countries. Also detailed mechanisms involved in the treatment, especially role of macrophytes and microorganisms, need to be understood. Precautions must be taken in the use of CWs to prevent proliferation of mosquitoes. This review presents prospects and problems in propagating CWs for different types of wastewater, with special focus on domestic wastewater treatment.

Pollutant removal by Canna Generalis in tropical constructed wetlands for domestic wastewater treatment

Constructed wetlands have not been commonly used in Vietnam due to the lack of information in the selection of proper types of constructed wetlands, type of reeds, design parameters and performance efficiency, in tropical climates. This paper focuses on Canna generalis, which is a common reed and easy to grow both in water and wet land conditions. Two kinds of hybrid constructed wetlan...

A Hybrid Constructed Wetland System for Decentralized Wastewater Treatment

Constructed wetland technology has been widely applied around the world to treat domestic wastewaters from the single family home to small communities. Constructed wetlands can be classified as either surface flow wetlands (similar to natural wetlands) or subsurface flow wetlands, where the wastewater flows through a media. Subsurface flow constructed wetlands can either be horizontal flow syst...

Anammox enrichment and constructed wetland inoculation for improvement of wastewater treatment performance

This study contributes to the improvement of low-cost biotechnology for wastewater treatment in constructed wetlands (CWs). Constructed wetlands are energy efficient engineered systems that mimic the treatment processes of natural wetlands, removing polluting organic matter, nutrients, and pathogens from water. The aim of this study was to investigate the advisability of the inoculation of hori...

Performance Evaluation of Surface Flow Constructed Wetland System by Using Eichhornia crassipes for Wastewater Treatment in an Institutional Complex

Land areas which are wet during part or all of the year are referred as wetlands. Constructed wetlands are manmade systems that mimic the functions of natural wetlands and applied for wastewater treatment. Aim of the present study is to investigate the feasibility of using a macrophytes, Eichhornia crassipes in constructed wetland for treatment of wastewater in an institutional complex. The dai...

Constructed Wetlands for Wastewater Treatment: A Review

The first experiments on the use of wetland plants to treat wastewaters were carried out in the early 1950s by Dr. Käthe Seidel in Germany. The first full scale systems were put in operation during the late 1960s and since then constructed wetland systems have been spreading throughout the world. At present, there are several types of constructed wetlands used for wastewater treatment. Free wat...
